    The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, and involved German U-boats attempting to prevent convoys bringing supplies from abroad to Britain, while the Allies tried to sink the U-boats. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill later wrote "The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril".
