The US Government's Foreign Service Institute (FSI) trains foreign affairs professionals who are being posted abroad. The FSI categorises languages according to the average amount of time it takes students to reach “Professional Working Proficiency”. There are five categories, from I (the easiest) to V.
1. Two of these languages are classified by the FSI as Category I, but which is in Category II?
2. French is one of the easiest languages to learn because French and English share so many words. What proportion of English words do the FSI say have French origins?
3. The FSI says that the more cases in a language (where words change their form depending on their role in the sentence), the harder it is to learn. Which of the following has most cases, and is considered hardest to learn?
