The One O'Clock Gun is a time signal fired from Edinburgh Castle every day at precisely 1:00 p.m., except on Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day. It was established in 1861 as a time signal for ships in the Port of Leith and the Firth of Forth.

    1. The firing of the One O'Clock Gun dates back to 1861, when businessman John Hewat brought the idea to Edinburgh, after a visit to which city?

    2. Sound travels relatively slowly in air, so a "Time Gun Map" was produced to help people work out exactly when they would hear the gun. The map shows that it should be heard at 11 seconds past one in the Port of Leith. What would be the effect on the time delay if the weather got colder?

    3. How many times does the Gun fire on Remembrance Sunday?
