BS1363 is a British Standard which specifies the most common type of AC power plugs and sockets used in the UK. We usually refer to them as "13 amp plugs" or just "13A plugs".

    1. The three pins of a UK plug are commonly called live, neutral and earth. Which pin is nearest the top of the photograph above?

    2. Although they are called "13 amp plugs", it is often safer to fit a plug with a fuse with a lower rating than 13 amps. For example, the plug for a bedside lamp would typically be fitted with a 3 amp fuse. Fuses are colour coded to aid identification. What is the colour code for a 3 amp fuse?

    3. What does the fuse in the plug actually protect?
