Matthew Webb successfully swam across the English Channel, from England to France, in 1875. Since then, there have been many attempts at this feat.
1. The shortest distance across the Channel is from Shakespeare Beach, Dover, to Cap Gris Nez in France. What is this distance, in round numbers?
2. The Channel Swimming Association was founded in 1927 to observe and authenticate all cross-Channel swims in the Strait of Dover. What type of swimming costume is allowed by the CSA?
3. Gertrude Ederle successfully swam the Channel in 1926, becoming the first woman to do so. What other record did she set?
