A pillar box is a free-standing post box, as found in the United Kingdom.
1. The first pillar box design for London was stubby and rectangular, surmounted by a decorative ball. They were replaced because people complained that they were ugly. One survived and was earmarked for preservation. But why was it lost?
2. In Scotland there were protests when the first boxes made in the reign of Elizabeth II were produced. These bore the cypher "E II R", but there were objections because Queen Elizabeth is the first Queen of Scotland to bear that name, Elizabeth I having been Queen of England and Ireland only. How did the Scots show their disapproval?
3. The most recent UK design featured a “Belfast Flap”. What is this for?
