Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness was introduced in 1822 by the German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, in his Treatise on Mineralogy. It is especially useful to geologists, who use it to compare the hardness of minerals as an aid to identifying them.

The scale runs from 1 (softest, e.g. talcum) to 10 (hardest, diamond). Minerals are placed on the scale according to whether they can scratch, or are scratched by, other materials.

    1. Diamond is the hardest mineral listed in Mohs scale. Which of these is next hardest?

    2. What type of scale is Mohs scale?

    3. According to Mohs scale, which is the hardest of these materials?
