In 2004, Oprah Winfrey opened the 19th season of her talk show by giving a brand-new Pontiac G-6 sedan to each of the 276 members of her studio audience. Each person was given a white box tied with a red ribbon, and was told that one of the boxes contained the keys to a car. In fact, every box contained a set of keys, so everybody got a car, amid much excitement.

    1. The Oprah Winfrey Show paid the sales tax and registration for each car, but even so, most of the audience members found they would be liable for up to $7,000...for what?

    2. The audience members had no idea they were going to be given a car. What precaution did the TV company take to avoid possible problems?

    3. Oprah's audience could comfortably fit into five buses, which would occupy around 60 metres of road space. How much road would they occupy if they all drove their new cars away at the same time?
